The Blue-throated Macaw, a species in critical danger of extinction Print E-mail

The Blue-throated Macaw (Ara glaucogularis) is a parrot found mainly in the section of Beni in Bolivia. This species, which is endemic to Bolivia, is in danger of extinction. The Blue-throated Macaw is considered one of the most rare birds in the world. In 2006, BirdLife International estimated the population of the wild Blue-throated Macaw to be between 50 to 249 birds in the Central North section of Bolivia that is called Beni.

Since January 2004, Armonia/Loro Parque Fundacion has administered a conservation program for the Blue-throated Macaw under the direction of Mr. Bennet Hennesey.

The goal of this program is to investigate the species population along with educating the public about this unique parrot and it’s conservation in today’s world.

In 2005-2006, 20 birdhouses were installed for the Blue-throated Macaw. Of these 20 birdhouses, the Blue and Yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna) used 18 of them.

The Blue-throated Macaw can re-use the same nest for a few years. But competition with other bird species like the Blue and Yellow Macaw or the Toucan diminishes the nests available for the Blue-throated Macaw.

One of the birdhouse program’s objectives is to experiment with different structures in order to improve the specific birdhouse for the Blue-throated Macaw.

Bird Endowment has established a program to finance the production of birdhouses for the conservation of species on the verge of extinction.

The pictures of the nesting boxes of Bolivia are of Hernan "Nancho" Vargas.

Junco Technologies willingly collaborates in this experience. A laboratory birdhouse was specifically produced for this conservation program for the Blue-throated Macaw.

This laboratory birdhouse offers numerous technical elements that will facilitate the analysis of different components in order to produce a specifically adapted one for the Blue-throated Macaw.

Following are a few facts:

  • Variety of entrance diameter;
  • Variety of birdhouse depths;
  • Specific interior cavity to install infrared camera;
  • Thermometer for temperature analysis;
  • Lateral opening for observation and maintenance;
  • Ventilation, drainage, interior space adapted etc…

The birdhouse dimensions can be rather big. You be the judge.
