Barred Owl, Strix varia

This owl frequently uses birdhouses built especially for this species. It is found in forests, especially humid areas within mature deciduous forests. It forages at night on small mammals. Putting up a feeder is a unique way to be able to make observations during the day. In the Southern USA, it breeds as early as January, and further North, in Canada, it may begin in April or May.
