This species inhabits coniferous and mixed forests. It forages along the tree trunk, head downwards. It is recommended to put wood chips on the floor of the birdhouse to simulate the natural nesting environment. Breeding extends from late April through May. This bird feeds mainly on insects and seeds (sunflower seeds, peanuts, fat, and suet at feeders).
