This abundant woodpecker inhabits deciduous woodlands with bushes and brushes. It is easily mistaken for the slightly larger Hairy Woodpecker. Downies feed on insects and seeds (sunflower seeds, peanut butter, fat, and suet at feeders). They are frequently seen at feeders in Winter. Breeding occurs in May and June.
