Inhabitant mature forests, this mid-size woodpecker is larger than the Downy Woodpecker forwith which it is easily mistaken. The floor of the birdhouse needs to be covered with wood chips to simulate the natural environment. Breeds between May and June. Feeds on insects and seeds (sunflower seeds, peanut butter, fat, and suet at feeders). This bird is a frequent visitor at feeders in Winter.
