Usually found in mature deciduous forest, this large woodpecker forages on insects deep below the tree trunk in which it bores deep oval holes, a typical feature for this species. This bird is a permanent resident throughout its range. Birdhouses are important alternatives to help maintain the population in their natural environment. This woodpecker breeds between April and May.
