Males are very colorful. This species inhabits water streams, ponds and bogs. It nests in cavities, often some distance from water surfaces, up to 550 - 650 yards (350 - 450 m). It adopts frequently birdhouses specifically built for the species. It is the only duck in North America to breed twice during the breeding season that can begin in January in Southern USA, and March/April in Canada.
